As Renewables.org completed its first full year of operation, we saw a promising trend in investor behavior: users who supported Global South solar projects often returned to invest again. With the introduction of automated investing tools and a growing base of repeat investors, our fundraising efforts became more predictable, efficient, and scalable.

Throughout 2024, Renewables.org experienced strong growth in recurring investments through our 'Auto Invest' and 'Auto Redeploy' programs, as well as an increase in repeat investors making second and third investments.

Single vs. Multiple Investment Accounts

By the end of 2024:

  • 473 investors had made a single investment.
  • 145 investors had completed multiple transactions.

This ratio reflects several factors:

  • As our first year in operation, many users were still becoming familiar with the platform.
  • A significant number of users joined via gift cards, and these users were generally less likely to reinvest than those who made their first investment directly.
  • Some of our largest accounts operate on an annual distribution schedule, meaning they only invested once – so far.

The increase in repeat transactions towards the end of the year was driven by:

  • The introduction of our subscription-based ‘Auto Invest’ product.
  • The launch of ‘Auto Redeploy,’ which reinvests user balances over $25 automatically.
  • Higher engagement during the holiday season.
  • Greater trust and engagement from users who had received multiple repayments and impact reports.

As our user base grows, existing investors will create a stronger foundation for future fundraising. Notably, only 5% of repaid funds have ever been withdrawn from Renewables.org, reinforcing our confidence in sustained growth.

One particularly encouraging metric: **$75,000 of investment came from users who had already made at least one previous transaction.** This indicates strong user satisfaction and a willingness to continue supporting Global South solar projects. As we enhance Renewables.org and deepen engagement with our most committed investors, we expect this figure to rise.

Automated Investing

In 2024, we introduced two automated investing products:

  • Auto Invest: A subscription service that bills users via PayPal monthly and credits their accounts with new investments.
  • Auto Redeploy: A feature that automatically reinvests accumulated balances into Global South solar projects.

These programs generated $15,150 in new investments, a number we anticipate will grow as more users activate subscriptions. In addition, these features were only available for 7 and 3 months of 2024 respectively, so they are bound to grow.

Bottom Line

Recurring investments not only provide Renewables.org with more predictable revenue—critical for engaging with solar developers and philanthropies—but also validate that users appreciate our platform and want to invest more.

Perhaps most importantly, recurring investments create momentum. Unlike first-time investments, they require fewer resources to acquire, allowing us to focus on product development, new sales channels, and customer acquisition.

The growth in this segment was a major highlight of the year, driven by strategic product launches. As existing users become more familiar with Renewables.org, we expect even greater participation and deeper engagement in the future.
